The seventh annual Teddy Bear Hospital and Picnic, hosted by the MSU Department of Pediatrics & Human Development was held at the Michigan 4H Children’s Garden on campus on Saturday, October 6, 2012.
MSU pediatricians and medical students mend everything from a loose stitch to a broken heart when children bring their teddies and other stuffed friends to over 24 specialty clinics at the hospital. Guests are greeted by the MSU Women’s Basketball Team; they enjoy hands-on activities and a picnic lunch in the children’s garden to top off the day!

Why a Teddy Bear Hospital?
For children, a visit to the doctor can often be stressful, especially when they are not feeling well or are worried about receiving a shot or other treatment.
Parents can help reduce stress and anxiety for their children and themselves by preparing their child for the visit. One excellent way to do this is by bringing them to an event like the Teddy Bear Hospital & Picnic, where teddy bears become the patients, and children can witness our specialists mend everything from a loose stitch to a broken heart. The Teddy Bear Picnic at MSU can uniquely alleviate a child’s anxieties over health care. At the same time, parents are able to meet and interact with MSU doctors and local pediatricians and child health specialists. Valuable information on children’s health issues and pediatric resources in mid-Michigan is featured and distributed.
Designed especially for children, their parents and of course, a favorite teddy bear friend, the Teddy Bear Picnic is filled with excitement and fun! Area pediatricians, medical staff, dentists and volunteers joined forces to treat children’s teddy bears in our own Teddy Bear Hospital. Other activities included live music, a picnic lunch, story time, a visit from Coach Merchant and MSU Women’s Basketball players, the Spartan Marching Band and more! Local police and fire departments provide finger printing and educational shows. Kid’s names are drawn for prizes throughout the day.
