Lansing State Journal reporter Rachel Greco just published a comprehensive article on our own Dr. André Bachmann and his collaboration with Helen DeVos Children's Hospital physician Dr. Giselle Sholler. Greco traces the history of Dr. Bachmann's interest in difluoromethylornithine (DFMO) as a treatment for neuroblastoma, from a happenstance encounter in Paris fourteen years ago to Dr. Sholler's continuing second-phase clinical trials.
Dr. Bachmann discusses the motivation for work:
“I’ve been privileged to meet these kids and their parents over the last 14 years," Bachmann said. "That’s really what got me going in this research. It can’t leave you without a mark somehow when you see how these parents struggle. That's my motivation."
Dr. Bachmann is tenured Professor in the Department of Pediatrics & Human Development, having joined our Grand Rapids faculty just over a year ago in January of 2015.
